To capacitate Cenphilians to respond in disaster and medical emergency situations, the Central Philippines State University’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) conducted a First Aid Training on July 25-26, 2024 at CPSU Main Campus Mt. Ballo Hall.
Volunteer students, faculty from CPSU’s campuses, and administrative staff joined the training, learning management of common injuries and medical conditions, and the proper use of first-aid kit and equipment in providing necessary emergency aid.
The DRRM personnel also conducted a comprehensive lecture on Basic Life Support (BLS) lecture and demonstration and the conduct of emergency response procedures.
“Our motivation in conducting this training in disaster risk reduction and management are firstly, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is anticipating the ‘big one’ and when that monstrous earthquake comes, what is our preparation? We need to make sure that we have the knowledge and skills to survive and help. Secondly, the calamities that the Philippines and other countries face are catastrophic. As members of the university’s community, we must be prepared, and this training is one of the start points in obtaining that readiness,” said Dr. Alejandro E. Nalagon, DRRM Director.
City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Kabankalan City assisted in the activities conducted during the training’s second day in support of the endeavor.
“I believe that it is necessary to undergo this training to help in ensuring the safety of the community in times of emergency. With the knowledge and life-saving skills that I acquired; I am encouraged to aid people when the need arises. Lastly, the entirety of the DRRM training made me realize that we should be ready always,” expressed be one of the trainees, Mr. Cherbert Palangga, College of Hospitality Management Pantry In-Charge.
The training is a relevant and timely initiative given that the Philippines is an archipelago situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire and faces the Pacific Ocean—vulnerable to natural disasters and calamities with Super Typhoon Carina, recently causing flooding in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.
