The Department of Science and Technology โ€“ Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) invited Cenphilian weavers to participate in the Philippine Handloom Weaving Festival (PHWF) held on November 18โ€“23, 2025 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte.

Two weavers from the CPSU Handloom Weaving Center, Ms. Irene Artica Jalapa and Ms. Ruth Labason Amaro, represented the university at the event, where CPSU proudly showcased its artisansโ€™ creations at its exhibit stall.

The university presented a diverse collection of handwoven clothing apparel, scarves, and mufflers produced at its weaving center, which also highlighted the natural dye-extraction techniques learned by the weavers, reflecting CPSUโ€™s commitment to sustainable textile practices.

PHWFโ€™s objectives included showcasing diverse handloom weaving techniques and textiles from different regions; promoting cultural preservation and intergenerational knowledge transfer; expanding market access and collaboration opportunities; creating stronger linkages among weaving communities, local governments, and partner institutions; and encouraging innovation through technology demonstrations and knowledge-sharing activities.

As part of the invitation, participants toured the Sericulture Research and Development Institute (SRDI), where they learned about silk production and sustainable sericulture practices, and visited the Bangar Weaving Center in La Union.

The participation of the CPSU Handloom Weaving Center as invited by the DOST-PTRI to the PHWF is a testament to the universityโ€™s contribution in bolstering the local weaving industry, underscoring its support to its inter-agency partnerโ€™s initiatives for empowering communities on sustainable livelihood engagements and for the creation of artisanal works that celebrate Philippine artistry and ingenuity.
